The use of a gigahertz LO and dividing it down is an approach that
UWSDR will be taking for our lower frequency front ends. On the
microwave bands obviously we are obviously using the fundamental of the
VCO and for 10 GHz or higher we may very well be multiplying. The
highest frequency fractional-N chip we could find goes as high as 6 GHz
so far.
We'll probably be rolling our own VCOs because the commercial packaged
ones either don't cover the required range(s) and/or don't have good
enough phase noise. I believe that ceramic resonators are involved.
Our aim is to be at least as good as existing amateur technology
multiplied crystal oscillators on the microwave bands, which when
divided should be excellent.
