[hpsdr] Mechanical considerations for ATLAS cards

Chris,
By mounting all the external connectors on the side opposite the bus connector we are eliminating the possibility of using a easily obtainable computer case (any size, not just rackmountable) and forcing everyone to use a custom designed case.

If you want to make a super small case, that's fine, but I don't see how increasing the card size to 100x185 and moving the external connectors to a different edge of the card prevents you from making a custom case. An optional bracket for mounting in the case doesn't have to be installed.

If I remember correctly the V5 OZY only has the DB9, the DB25, and the USB connectors going to the outside world.
If there's a space problem, then just convert the DB9 and/or the DB25 to headers and use an external flat cable with an appropriate DB connector (like the do for computers).

Strictly personal biases:

(a) No. I have very little space available to me. I would like this
product to be small and portable, not luggable. I'd like to toss it in
my suitcase.

(b) From Phil's latest design for Ozy, "component side" is getting
ambiguous.

(c) I keep seeing Atlas as a backplane a la VME, not a motherboard like
a PC, but I suppose that's just me. I like Phil's current layout of Ozy.

(d) Given my prejudice on (a), it seems unlikely that this can work with
only one edge, again, cf. Phil's latest Ozy.

Phil has all his connectors board mounted, so a mounting plate is not
needed. picoPSU-120 is self-mounting on the Atlas board.

***** High Performance Software Defined Radio Discussion List *****

I've got a few points to lobby the group on mechanical factors of cards
on the ATLAS bus:

(a) Can we modify the 100mm high by 100mm wide form factor to be 100mm
high by 200mm wide?
(b) Can we state that the card orientation method is component side AWAY
from the ATX power connector
(c) Can we modify any external connectors to be, looking at the card
from the component side, on the left perpendicular side
(d) Any intra-chassis connections/headers (JTAG, etc.) would be located
on the side parallel (top side of card) to the ATLAS connector.

If we did this we would have a little more area for circutry AND for us
folks who want to rackmount by using off-the-shelf ATX computer cases
(good 4U units are less that $120 in single quantities). Then we don't
need to build a mount for the power supply, don't need to build a mount
for the external connectors (just have a mounting bracket fabricated),
and you can mount a LCD display in the open front drive bays.
