Whenever I buy equipment that I plan to keep the first thing I do is gather all the data I can on it like in the case of the HP8640B or RA6840. Then I gather a collection of replacement parts and hanger queens.   
  FPGAs are very static sensitive and easy to blow if you handle them wrong. I wouldn't treat this stuff like a computer board. Static straps and a ESD work area unless you are feeling very lucky. fc
