Cubic uses relays for the low frequency bands because the reverse recovery time of the pin needs to be longer than the period of the signal it passes or distortion will be higher. 
  Relays being mechanical don't have dynamic range issues but are large and mechanical.
  Cubic used relays around the amplifier because it is switched out for the lowest band. The transformer in the amp must run out of reactance at the low end.
  I will try to scan my other stuff over the weekend and I dig out form the big storm going on tonight.  
  The gas discharge tube has much larger contacts than a NE2 so I suspect it will handle a lot more current. The leads look like #22 wire. frank
