[hpsdr] Janus - Ozy - SDR1000 simplicity

Joe,

Will this be the same if you are using, say a softrock as the RF section? Will the code that is shipped with the Janus/Ozy also work with this? I assume that I will need to run Bills modified Power SDR software to use it with Janus (or maybe not)?

If it can be made to easily work with other front ends it will be great. Any tips would be appreciated.

I add my congratulations to Phil/Bill et al for a really good job. Can't wait for the boards!

Malcolm

  Hi all,

I am currently working with Phil Harman on writing a manual on how to operate the Janus/Ozy combo with the SDR-1000. Because of all the discussions going on on the reflector about FPGAs, CPLDs, EEPROMs, JTAG and what have you I (and I assume other mere mortals like me) was expecting a separate initialization procedure would be required, not to mention special cables. NOT SO!

Through our various back and forths on text etc I discovered that Bill Tracey and he have really simplified it. Just to make sure that anyone considering buying Janus/Ozy to work with the SDR-1000, but holding off is not doing so due to wrong assumptions I thought I'd share it with the group here.

Janus will be shipped with its CPLD pre-programmed, as will Ozy with its EEPROM (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Ozy is connected to the PC via a USB cable. All the relevant audio connections are made to/from Janus and the SDR-1000, etc and for control a parallel cable between Ozy and SDR-1000. Then just select Janus as you would any other sound card in PowerSDR. That's it. Ozy's FPGA is then automatically loaded through the USB and you're ready to roll. Future updates to Janus's CPLD and Ozy's FPGA will all occur through Ozy's USB connection.

If you think about it, it's even simpler than installing a sound card, as there is no driver to install, no mixer to deal with, nothing. Just hook up and run.

  Hats off guys!
