This may be at least a partial answer to your question. The effective number of
bits of the AK5394A is about 20-21. Recently I checked on 10.1 MHz the noise and
clipping levels of my unmodified SDR-1000 connected directly from the
sampling capacitors to the differential inputs of Janus (without
INA163 amplifier). The voltage gain from the antenna input to Janus
input was 18.9 dB (a little higher than I expected). In the picture
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/ahti/sdr-1000/sdr1k-janus.png you can
see the noise level -134.9 dBm/500Hz. The clipping level was measured
-7.3 dBm. Obviously still some room for improvements, but that must be
made for the SDR-1000 like FlexRadio has done with the Flex-5000
design.
