I would also like to see the boards made available as an alternative to
buying the finished product.

***** High Performance Software Defined Radio Discussion List *****

I am quite familiar with toroids as I used to
optimize the toroid windings on the filters of
my homemade terminal units for RTTY - forty
five years ago. Please see this list's
archive about the difficulties in removing
the wire's coating.

I have built my own transmitters, VFOs, and
receivers (not kits). I have built my own
chassis from sheet metal, ground crystals to
change frequency, and rewound power
transformers. I built my own "bug" semi-
automatic key when I couldn't afford a Vibroplex.
Two years ago I repaired the open winding
inside of a Hallicrafters IF transformer.
Try taking the enamel off of THAT wire
without breaking the wire.

I built my first TNC and was the first ham
from my county on packet. I built the first
amateur repeater phone patch in my county.
I installed the first IRLP in my county.

I am aware of the difficulty of finding parts.
I lived in the bush as EL6C 1974-1975. The
nearest electrical power was 45 Kilometers away,
the nearest fuel station much more distant. I
got the loan of a small gasoline generator in
1975 and made QSOs by the light of a kerosene
lamp. My air time was rationed to much less
than I desired. If I didn't have something, I
had to fabricate it.

I can solder, I can wind toroids; I have already
mastered those skills. I have created layouts
in solid printed circuit boards by hand. In
the short time left in my life, I want to learn
additional skills and explore new ideas.

Given the choice between paying someone at TAPR
to rummage through piles of parts and put them
into a bag for me to sort and solder, versus
paying for a machine to automatically insert
and solder the parts, I chose to let the machine
do it and spend my time on learning, modifying,
and using the HPSDR. Life is short.
