A DS108 isn't a switch.  It's a "Dual Speed Hub."  They were popular for a while before switches came down in price.  They're essentially a 2-port switch with hubs connected to each port, one 10Mbit hub, and one 100Mbit hub.

I have a Linksys 8-port gigabit switch (EG008W), and my Aiport Extreme has gigabit ports on it.  Both work well enough, but my father has had problems with the Linksys switches at times.  This is kinda surprising since Linksys is now owned by Cisco.

Overall, I don't think there's a lot of difference between cheap desktop switches.  To get anything that's much better (decent management, fast switching fabrics, port aggregation, VLAN tagging, etc.) requires quite a bit more cash (A Cisco 2960G with 24 10/100/1000 ports and management is like $2360).
