Hi Shel,

With a 14bit DAC the best we can expect is a S/N of about 85dB - OK for an HF Tx but not good enough for a receiver LO I suggest.

  Looks like things have moved along a bit. The latest Kuhne 2mtr  transverters use a  high-level triple-balanced GaAs-FET ring mixer with an IP3 of >35 dBm.
  I cant find any links to gas fet rings, anybody any suggestions???

  Of course all this assumes that the tx 14bit  DAC is clean enough for the LO ???

    I use the Kuhne xverters as they are robust and I assume being from Germany they can handle the EU contests. 
    Only down side is that they are pricey.
