Dear Ed,

No, it had nothing to do with the 'crossover cable'.  The Metis DOES
correctly detect a crossover cable and does work correctly with one.  It
also works correctly with a straight-thru cable.

Most likely, he was trying to connect to Metis TOO SOON after powering up
Metis, so that his PC port DID NOT have an APIPA address itself.  So this is
solved by either plugging Metis into the same switch that the computer
connects to the internet thru (in this case his broadband
connection/switch), or if you have multiple ethernet ports on the PC, using
a separate switch to connect the second ethernet port and Metis, so that the
PC has an APIPA address shortly after it boots.
