Hi Jim - Some answers to you Q's:

>Questions:
>1. Is there a "getting started" document for somebody who has
>acquired the pieces but not opened the ESD bags (due to lack of time
>for hobby)?

Doc's we got are on the web site - see: http://openhpsdr.org/documents.php

>2. I've seen lots of firmware updates. Is there a document which
>discusses how/why to update, and what is latest for each board?

Latest firmware versions are here:
http://openhpsdr.org/download.php. Reason for updates is usually new
feature/function - best bet is usually to go with the latest when you
setup, and then to stay relatively current. They can be loaded with
HPSDR programmer with a Metis board or via Ozy Blaster if using Ozy -
don't have a doc handy on that at the moment.

>3. If I replace Ozy with Metis, how do audio, PTT, and CW Padle get
>to the SDR -- must I run 300 feet of wire, or is it all from the
>control computer to the SDR via ethernet? (Preferred)

With Metis the only connection from PC to HPSDR boards is via Cat 5
cable. However, Key, Mic, Speakers, PTT are attached to the boards,
so if the boards are remoted you need to solve sort out how to handle that.

>4. Can Atlis/Metis/Software support multiple receivers and
>transmitters, so that I could simultaneously be on 2m and the
>microwave band of choice? Or would I need a completely different HPSDR "rig"?

Not really -- we can support multiple Mercury boards on at Atlas bus
to support multiple receivers - usually for diversity. Not all the
software is really there for that yet. To do multiple independent
vhf and uwave bands would take some software work to interface and
switch the transverters at a minimum.

>5. Anybody know of a competent individual/organization which could
>assemble the Atlas for me at a reasonable price?

Off the top of my head don't know - suspect getting someone to build
an Atlas for you would not be hard.

>6. What else should I be asking that I'm not even smart enough to
>know to ask?

Not sure - think I'd kick the tires and get a basic system going and
then look at remoting and some of the more advanced configurations
you sound interested in.
