The waterfall is generated by the various computer software packages, not in firmware.  I believe the PowerSDR source pieces are all open source, so you can look in the source code repository for those.  I'll let the PowerSDR folks comment further on that implementation.

The meat of my code for the Mac is available in my tree at:

It uses OpenGL to accelerate the process and is loosely based off of the code from GNU Radio.  If you need help finding the GNU Radio implementation, I'm more than happy to look in my notes and point you in the correct direction.
