Dear Tim W4YN,
Metis will connect by direct or cross-over cable to your PC, useful if you
have multiple ethernet ports. Metis senses whether it's a direct or
cross-over cable and adjusts accordingly.
You can use your home router ONLY IF it's a real 'switch' (full-duplex) and
not a hub (half-duplex). If you have any doubts, you can get a small 4 or 5
port autosensing gigabit switch for about $25, delivered, from New Egg (a
small Zyxel unit).
Even if you want to connect your Metis 'directly', I'd advise using a
switch, regardless, as this allows the PC, especially if running windows, to
have always a valid 'APIPA' address (169.254.x.x) at all times, and not just
when Metis is powered on. My PC kindly does this, so I use a switch for my
'otherwise-direct' connection.
