George,

Thanks for your comments. In response to your questions:

    1. Path to quartus_pgm is as follows:
c:\altera\10.1\qprogramer\bin\...
    2. The error 'Programing hardware cable not detected' is received after
selecting 'Penelope_v1.4' option.
    3. I am using Windows 7, 32 bit version.

I agree I need to complete step 3 of the README txt.

Thanks again.

Dear Ken,

The problem was NOT that the 'system' wasn't finding a batch file, it wasn't
finding the executable program used to do the programming, because you had
Quartus and not Quartus Programmer (QProgrammer) installed.

Quartus_pgm.exe is NOT a batch file; it is an EXE or executable file.

Of course you need to have the USBBlaster-Binaries directory from the SVN
repository or maybe Dave KV0N has them conveniently packaged. All that was
updated for Vista, to my knowledge, was the actual exe files that are used
in the process. There was no special procedure for Vista that I was aware
of, but I could be wrong.

If you are getting the 'programming cable not installed', that suggests that
you are NOT following the instructions in step 3 of the readme.txt file in
that directory. It suggests that your Ozy/Magister is NOT in 'programming
cable' (USBBLaster) mode. This is what Joe and I were discussing in our
emails. Did you read those and understand them?

Would you mind confirming whether you have 32 bit Windows 7 or 64 bit
windows 7?

Thanks for your comments, George. I have made some progress. The system is

now finding the batch file. However I am now getting the following error -
'Programing cable not installed' or something similar. I think the problem
is that Magister has not be loaded with the files required to program HPSDR
boards without the additional programming hardware.

This is the first time I have tried to update firmware. I think Magister
configuration is in order. Some of the procedures are not updated for
Windows 7. Will Vista procedures work?

Thanks again,

Ken - W5KQ

***** High Performance Software Defined Radio Discussion List *****

Dear Ken,
A common problem is that you have the FULL Quartus product installed, and
the programming software is under the Quartus\bin directory and NOT under
the QProgrammer\bin directory as is specified in the batch files. You have
several choices:
1) edit the batch file each time you download a new version of it to change
'QProgrammer' to 'Quartus'
2) where you find the Quartus directory (check the batch file for the path
appropriate for the version you are using and confirm visually by inspecting
with Windows Explorer), make a QProgrammer directory and put a copy of
Quartus\bin into QProgrammer so that you have a QProgrammer\bin directory
3) download and install QProgrammer.

You say that you have the Quartus software installed and not the QProgrammer
software. So any of the above will work to solve your problem.

Also note that one of the batch files in 'USBBlaster Binaries' didn't seem
to have been updated for 10.0 SP1. You can of course do that yourself,
following the pattern shown pretty clearly in the batch file, and by
comparing the batch files.
