What I've done is dump the part on the board, then push it around with
a toothpick.  If the PCB is laying flat on a table the part will not
move.

Not everyone needs to do this, they still make vacuum tubes.  My last
few projects were tube based.

But if you like to design and build using today's current technology
it involves writing software and soldering SMD parts.   Those are both
new skills for many people.
