G'day, Berndt.

The original design called for the heat spreader to be 3/16" thick.
Unfortunately, the one supplied is 1/4", the same as the corner spacers. You
need to either get longer corner spacers, or shim them with nuts, washers,
etc. See the "General Construction Notes" here (see page 6):

How much clearance does the PCB have above the copper spreader? The
copper spreader is 1/4" in thickness and the hexagonal spacers are 1/4"
in height also and the PCB basically rests on top of the heat spreader.
To make things worst, the solder pads for the transformer and other
components are touching the heat spreader and hence are shorting to
ground.
