I taught ESD and provided all our engineers with Ground Gard monitors, 
$10,000 well spent. 6' x 3' mats we already had.
It's also essential to keep the straps clean by washing in warm soapy 
water and always to ensure proper contact with the wrist maintained, 
that's where a monitor also helps.

What's not appreciated is that 1V of static electricity across the 
narrow tracks of a chip is the equivalent of thousands of volts across a 
mm, enough to partially damage a track and may even completely destroy it.
Under a microscope the damage resembles a moon crater.
