DFC/GPU based rigs are nothing more than the next generation of
transceivers.  Just as carburetors
have been replaced by fuel injection on engines, SDR will totally replace
discrete transistor/resister/inductor
hardware.  Many of the newer designs from the big 3 are at least partly SDR
under the hood already.
They all soon will be nothing more than computers/fpgas/GPUs inside,
interfaced to nice knobs & displays.

In the tradition of "building your own hardware", we have evolved to just
that: building our own rigs
with current technology.  ALL of these different efforts are useful.  We
can all do our own thing, and
re-purpose the good ideas of others as we find useful.
