Thanks to all for you replies.

The main issue I had (which was a forehead slap for me) was that I had different sample rates between the Radio and Microphone/Speaker "sound cards.  Once I changed this everything settled down nicely.  I can now receive & transmit fine with FreeDV and my PowerSDR/HPSDR setup.

I do have the latest firmware in my SM1000 and am most impressed with 700D.  Audio going from the PC to the SM1000 does sound a better to my ear, probably due to me using a R0DE Podcaster microphone, which cost more than the SM1000 all up! :-)  I'm sure if I use a better outboard microphone on the SM1000 it would sound better.

I'm still working on an outboard RF amplifier for my HPSDR, I'll be using an old Codan 4404 400W RFPA that spent a lot of it's life on a fishing board.  The 500mW from Penelope is a bit limiting, but has worked well with WSPR tests on both 30m and 40m.  It's amazing how far you can make 500mW go with WSPR.

I saw David VK5DGR give a demo of FreeDV 2020 at an AREG meeting, most impressive!
