I just joined and am very enthused about this project. I have a desk
drawer full of "engineering samples" of ADC's and DAC's I have obtained
for just this sort of project.

Pardon me for not having read all the archives and jumping in, but we
need to remember the lessons of the TNC-2 and software. Yes, GNU is
great and I whole hardily support it, but we need to make sure we can
develop GNU-based toolchains and debugging tools to support the target
processor(s) including the FPGA's, etc. A $20 dollar processor that
takes a $3500 toolset to program is not a bargain! I would rather pay
more for the processor/FPGA and have a cheap or no-cost set of complete
tools for it. This would include JTAG and everything.
