Re: HamHUD project status?
Posted by: "Steve

(PDT)

Quoting Bob Burns K4RXR:

> Could someone post a status
update? What's being developed and what's
> the timeframe? Not looking for
firm dates, but are we talking weeks,
> months, years?

Hi
Bob,

I understand that you, like a lot of those new to the HamHUD
group,
want to know what's next for HamHUD and the
timeframe.

Unfortunately, when new developments are announced, some
people
immediately start bugging the designers with questions like
"when will
it be ready?" and "will it have such-and-such
feature?" Also, more
and more the ham community expects
new collaborative projects to
approach commercial quality at release,
the bugs already worked out.
For these reasons and others, I've
been reticent to announce the new
HamHUD developments that I and
others have been busily working on
behind the scenes.

Another
reason new developments haven't been talked up is that several
different parties are working on them. There really isn't a
single
point of contact between these disparate teams; Dale Seaburg
and I
have some involvement in all four developments, but we really
didn't
want to speak for the teams.

That being said, it
probably is about time to establish timeline goals
for the HamHUD
development projects, and to at least let the HamHUD
user base know
that something is cooking. I encourage the
development
teams to think about doing that.

So, here's what I'm going to do:
I'll state a brief description of
the four development efforts I know
about. I'll then give a short
status of the one I know the most
about, and let the team leaders of
the other three efforts give some
status, if they are inclined to do so.

Here are the four, in no certain
order:

1. HamHUD III. This is Juergen DB3TB's baby, and I'll
let him talk
about it as much or as little as he likes. Dale
KG5LT has been
involved here, too. I will say that what I've
seen of this project is
VERY impressive.

2. HamHUD
SDR. A multiband software radio / TNC / video HamHUD /
system
hub. Steve KA9MVA is working the technical end of this one,
with
Dale KG5LT, Tony KD7TA and Jason KE4NYV consulting on specs and
functionality. It will be interoperable with HamHUD II and III,
or
useful by itself with any NTSC/PAL video monitor. No laptop
or PC
will be needed for the software radio functionality (unlike
the
FlexRadio SDR-1000), just a memory stick. Status: parts of
the HamHUD
SDR testbed are running, but I don't want to say much more
than that.
Preliminary release goal is the 2007 Hamvention, but
don't quote me on
that.

3. HamHUD II KISS Support
Firmware. Dale KG5LT and Curt WE7U are
working on this.
How about an update, guys?

4. HamHUD II Rev E Kits / Firmware
Support. Jason KE4NYV, Juergen
DB3TB, and Dale KG5LT did a great
job on the last run of kits. One or
more of you might want to
comment on whether you are interested in
another run of HH2RE kits, or
waiting for HamHUD III and HamHUD SDR.

If I have left any effort out,
please chime in and correct me.

73,

Steve Bragg KA9MVA
--
