Actually, if you look at the underlying architecture, you'll see that 
while Altera is calling it a CPLD, in reality it is a small FPGA.

The difference is that a CPLD typically has a small collection of wide 
logic functions with limited feedback; the FPGA is a larger collection 
of small, narrow-width functions with a general purpose interconnect scheme.

Altera appears to be promoting the MAX II family as CPLDs for marketing 
purposes...
