Chris,

Thanks for your feedback and contribution. There is nothing better than 
years of practical experience when trying to solve these problems.  As 
Phil_C says, you have given us lots to think about!

I guess that one problem I have is having taken all this time to learn how 
to program FPGAs I want to use them to solve every  problem :).  Your 
suggestion of using existing divider chips is really great.

With input from others I will re-write the previous paper and introduce the 
concepts that have been suggested.

Thanks to all for a most stimulating discussion.
