Some analog output for AGC of the RF front end might be nice, but I tend to 
use gain/attenuation along with additional pre-selection ahead of any 
communications system.  Bring the gain so that the noise just increases and 
use the full dynamic range behind to its fullest. 

So how do these spread spectrum or other modes that hear below the noise 
react to that sort of pre-selection/AGC?
