[hpsdr] Physical board properties

Alex!

The layouts were discussed for over 2 months, and this was NOT the
conclusion regarding connector orientation. I only glanced at Chris's
message last week since I was busy with Dayton and other e-mail discussions.
It was not until I looked at the Wiki today and did a doubletake and
realized that this is NOT what we discussed. This layout does not conform to
PC enclosure mounting or even a custom enclosure.

The enclosure discussions and agreements were, in ancient history 2 months
ago. I went back and checked. I was defeated on using the PCI buss extenders
which was a good thing in view of the Atlas, however, the PC card mounting
is the same as a PCI card on .80 spacings specifically to use the L-bracket
openings in a PC enclosure! Just like a computer card.

As is you would have to fabricate a custom mounting device to get the cards
out the back of the case. Makes no sense when the bottom of computer
enclosures are a built in mounting plate! Even custom cases would still use
the bottom of the case as a flat mounting platform for the Atlas with
standoffs to adjust to the right height for the vertical card facing the
openings to the rear. This layout just doesn't fit anything but custom
mounting, which is why we went to computer enclosure.

I guess somewhere we skipped a beat.

Thanks
Eric

Yes, it was a square peg - round hole problem.

There is no reason why we can't support three board sizes:

100x100mm
100x160mm - eurocard
100x185mm - reduced height PCI (PCI is normally 121.92x185mm)

I think some of the more complicated cards (GIBRALTAR comes to mind) will
need as much real estate as possible.
Plus if we go with the option of a larger card size we might be able to cram
more stuff onto a card and possibly keep our card count down. Then the
pressure to have an ATLAS extender card goes down.
