I'm also interested in using Mercury/Penelope for other purposes, and 
would like the ability to be tie directly into the ADC and DAC 
respectively, as well as the ability to switch easily between the HF 
transceiver mode and the "external device" mode.

There are a multitude of possible uses for this sort of arrangement, 
from driving transverters, to test equipment, even providing LO 
signals  and an IF for crystal controlled VHF/UHF equipment (i.e. a 
DDS and IF for test purposes).

I'm all for enhancing the versatility.
