You're right Graham,

I guess it's a while since I was a designer and the socketed component
concept doesn't apply anymore, thank you for explaining that.

Well, these are all surface mount parts.  I don't think they come in 
wire leaded packages,
or anything that I could socket.  So once they are soldered down, I have 
no choice but
to protect them as best I can from the real world.

A lot of the newer technology parts are only offered in surface mount, now.
