One suggestion is KiCAD <www.lis.inpg.fr/realise_au_lis/kicad/>. This is a 
complete Schematic Capture/PCB Design/Gerber viewer package which has been 
around for long enough to be stable, but which has active development and 
user communities.  The software is routinely being run on Win, Linux, BSD and 
OSX platforms.

I've produced about 20 prototype PCB designs up to 6layer using this software 
over the last 18months and I have no wish to return to the, admittedly old, 
copy of Protel which I've had from new.
