Iron cores used in filters will work as long as they don't go into saturation. It is a balancing act with wire length and size setting resistance. A low risistance winding will help the Q. NPO caps are the way to go for thermal stability and have a high Q. I have a number of different low pass filters from 100 watt finals using 1 inch cores. I would think 1/2 inch would work fine. It wouldn't hurt to run the low level TX drive signal through it.  fc
