I would suggest modifying the connectors so that only the proper cable can
be inserted. One method of doing this can be found here:

This note was written for the KIO2 connector on the Elecraft K2. "Bad
Things" can happen if a standard RS-232 cable is plugged in there. This note
explains how to modify the connector and a mating cable so that each is
unique. The same technique could be used for Penny and Ozy. Just place the
"key" in a different location on each, and label the cables.
