A detachable touch-sensitive screen and one or two assignable knobs, 
also detachable (wireless?).
Touch the screen for button presses.  Touch the screen to assign a 
slider to a physical knob.

See the earlier post on the Lemur.  Will the Computer Control Command 
standard support
display and selection from a waterfall display?  The digital music folk 
have been working
on this stuff for a long time - also see the earlier post on Lemur.  
I'll bet the OSC standard is
networkable, etc., and if it catches on you may eventually be able to 
buy a good control panel at your
local music store.
