It seems like what's needed more than a windows "sound driver" is a
"radio driver" that all of the various software packages would
hopefully support.  Then there could also be room for some control
channels accessible through a common library.

If done right it would probably even be easier for the software
maintainers to write code for it than dealing with sound under
windows.  Vista makes things even worse - but that could all be
bypassed with a proper radio interface.

This could benefit other hardware platforms as well since they could
implement it on their end and gain wider software support.

Someone just needs to write up some docs and sample libraries ... then
the fun part of getting it adopted by a couple of software packages so
it can gain momentum.
