While I agree that neither Windows nor Linux can be considered real time systems, nevertheless they must not be 
discarded without further considerations. I am not speaking here of the problem of full QSK, which I admit is a 
difficult one. But, for receive only, you can manage the 6 MB/sec USB data flow from a Perseus sampling at 1 Ms/sec 
using a laptop with a Pentium M clocked at 1.5 GHz and with 512 MB of RAM, with absolutely no buffer under/overruns and 
no audio interruptions, under Windows XP. Audio latency on the order of 150ms.
I know that it can be done, as Winrad can do that.
