Near-term, meaning out about 2.5 or three years yet, the prime platform will
probably be something like Qt or GTK+ using embedded WebKit -- in other
words, a hybrid of "native" applets for high-performance widgets like
panadapters, and HTML/javascript based widgets for control. The idea is to
have all of these applets and widgets living in a Dashboard-type desktop
environment rather than laid out in a single application window, whether
that window is a dedicated user app or a browser. In this scenario the
distinction between "on the desktop" and "in a browser" gets pretty faint.

As far as 2800 receivers are concerned, OpenGL rules: fast interactive 3D
graphics are key.
