[hpsdr] Mercury arrived

Hi Chris,
Thanks for all info about British customs and VAT which is 25% here. The only reason for my input to the reflector was to alert importers of TAPR products to Sweden that different customs services in the same country use apparently different customs ID-numbers for product classification which entails varying duties and amount of VAT for different importers.

  Here in UK I have only ever been charged VAT on items over a certain value *PLUS* Parcel Force charge £8 for administering the deal. So, for instance, Mercury arrived about a week ago with a quoted value of $329 which converted to approx £232.80. The VAT rate in UK is currently 15% (down from 17.5% in an attempt to combat the credit crunch!) so the VAT was £32.92 plus £8 Parcel Force administration charge = £42.92


  BTW Parcel Force would deliver on a Saturday for an additional £12!!!!!!

    During the past weeks I opened  the mail box several times a day and hoped to find Mercury. Last not least it arrived today and I downloaded the most recent svn with Tortoise
    and hope to have the Atlas/Ozy/Penny/Mercury unit opera-tional soon.
    For importers of Mercury and other TAPR products it may be interesting to compare customs which are charged to you with those charged to other importers in the same country. A friend of mine had to pay a substantially higher amount because his customs agent used a  different customs identification number for the same TAPR product.
    I feel lucky to meet Mercury and companions at the end of  a radiotic life.
