The same idea occurred to me:

It has the added advantage of more flexibility in mounting the LPU. I 
added a hole between the heatsinks, so have a stable 3-point mount. I 
really didn't like the idea of having it dangling by the power 
connector, particularly as I take it portable.

You could probably simplify it more, as not all the wires are needed.
