---------------------The overwhelming advantage of a PC is an amazingly low
cost for an
integrated processor, display, keyboard, peripherals, processing resources,
etc.-------------------

I think the description PC puts the wrong slant on a comparison. Some
current PC mother boards
are now very small and have relativly low power consumption. The 6.75 inch
square of the Mini ITX standard is
good example and the new Intel D510MO quite typical. The 510 is 1.6Ghz dual
core and around 20W consumption and
FANLESS. With intergrated graphics and Gigabyte lan at 80USD it is
"amazingly low cost".

----------------------------It is just that the more I learn, Windows is a
horrible realtime
environment. Microsoft would probably say that it is not realtime, and was
not intended to be
used that way So either we figure out how to get Windows to behave the way
we want it
to, or-------------------------------------------

It is possible to get rid of a lot of useless overhead in XP by using NLite
to
strip it out. I was able to run PowerSDR in a very light install of around
100MB. Its also possible
to modify XP to run HORM and EWF like Windows embedded for insatnt start
and shutdown.
With such small installs its then possible to run a D510MO from a plugin
SATA flash drive.
I noticed that the D510 will continue to boot in the absence of keyboard or
mouse to suit stand alone applications.
This board will also boot from a network conection which might offer
interesting possibilitys from OZY II.

All this also applies to Linux. Using the the Puppy Linux Woof builder it
would be easy to do a special version of
Linux with low latency kernal etc.
