[hpsdr] A Question for Team Hermes

Hi Bhanu,

Thanks for your question. The current Hermes test code does not support ALC
from an external amplifier.

There is provision to input external analogue signals (0-3v) into Hermes
via the I/O header. However:

1. Traditionally ALC is a negative going signal so this would need to be
inverted before connecting to Hermes

2. In my opinion ALC is a very poor way of controlling the output power of
an amplifier since there is inherently a delay between the RF signal being
generated and the ALC voltage. With correctly implemented processing of the
Tx signal in the PC, and using the gain-per-band controls, then ALC should
not be needed.

Adding ALC capabilities to the Hermes code is not currently on the
development schedule.

Good to hear that you enjoyed the Ethernet version of Hermes, you are
fortunate since I have yet to see one!
