This IS the answer: use %20 instead of embedded spaces.  I've edited the
text file where I keep this link so that I don't have to retype it.  That's
the up/down side of having 3 machines, only one of which I use to run an
email client.

Slemeczi probably has the right answer:
According to the internet standards, a url must not contain a space
character. If your target path in the web server or svn server contain
spaces, you should encode the space using %20. This encoding should be
removed only in producing the target path. in a url you could not use
quotation marks to shield the embedded spaces.
