It's not obsolete, per se.  I just added WebSVN so that folks that just want to download code and don't need to version control or update it can just grab it off of a web page.  It makes little sense to me to be telling folks to install VCS clients merely to get software distributions.  The project kinda abuses SVN and uses it for a file repository rather than a VCS.  If we were smart, we'd start just using straight WebDAV rather than worrying about all the versioning stuff.  I may be proposing changing things around to make the software distribution make more sense at some point in time.
