Hi all,

Thanks to the many that responded to my query.

I did some more research and checked the pin outs for both ATX 20 pin and 24
pin versions and found them (from several sources) to be identical except of
course for pins 11,12,23,24 which are non-existent on the 20 pin version :)

Then I had a good look at the socket and where the 24 pin male was fouling
the 20 pin socket and saw that a bit of minor surgery on the plastic socket
would allow the 24 pin plug to assume an almost normal position.

I cut away the end of the connector and the plug now fits snugly as it
should.

First hurdle ... cleared.

Second hurdle will be the soldering of SMT devices ...
