[hpsdr] Qthpsdr debugging (newbie)

New Hermes as delivered from TAPR (October, 2012).
Qthpsdr components all build qt v 4.8 on Ubuntu 11 32 bit.
The executable seems to run, startup messages on the console seem correct.
LEDs look correct, dhcp indicates I have an address on Hermes.

My first step was config for hermes, then discover.  Discover is not functioning.

I feel I want to dig into logs, enable more diagnostics or use other utilities.
Could someone point me to the place where I can start reading, learning?
Are there any small utils? 

I'm more interested in the process some of the experts here would follow, than a quick fix.
