A small correction to my earlier post (pointed out to me by Chen, W7AY):

	... when testing with Hermes, there actually was a "keep alive" watchdog ping, but at a rate of only one UDP packet sent to Hermes every 15 seconds

This rate of "keep alive" seemed to work on Hermes but not on Metis/Mercury. One "keep alive" every 2 seconds seems to work on both.
