My ideas(hardware and firm/software):

Hardware:
SD card slot for map data, firmware updates, frequency list etc...
Bias for electret microphones via jumper.
Common type standard microphone connector
Reverse polarity protection on DC power wires.
50W or 20W of TX power, 1 X N connector per band.
(maybe one extra dedicated receiver for APRS traffic?)
2meters and 70 cm band, perhaps also 23 cm.
USB 2.0 or 3.0 port for connection to PC
on-board USB sound-card for digimode/portable operations ( JT65B EME is
possible with 50W and a Yagi)
high SWR protection.
-40 to +50 operating temperature range.
CNC cut enclosure,airplane grade aluminum.
PTT line output for amplifier control.
Key input (for straight and iambic)
adequate cooling for high duty-cycle digimodes.
In-built 1W stereo audio amplifier for directly driving a speaker.
low battery discharge protection (turns radio off at a battery voltage
of 10.5Vdc,getting stuck here with a FLAT car battery in the winter
season is not fun!)
GPS receiver ( UBLOX NEO-M8N,Supports GPS/QZSS L1 C/A, GLONASS L10F,
BeiDou B1 SBAS L1 C/A: WAAS, EGNOS, MSAS and is Galileo-ready E1B/C)
https://www.u-blox.com/en/product/neo-m8-series

Options:
Industry Standard TCP/IP network Ethernet interface supports static,
APIPA or DHCP IP address. (example: can be connected to
Broadband-Hamnet/HSMM-MESH router and be used as a mobile repeater)
Blue-tooth (connect headset/cars hands-free system)

Control head:
180x100mm Touchscreen connected to radio with cable or plugs, so the
head unit can be removed.
(optional bracket for x2 DIN mounting in the double DIN hole of a cars
stereo, this keeps the display unit from blocking areas of the cars
windscreen, no more flimsy suction cup mountings that looses their grip
and sends the control head flying at a bad moment.)

High visibility in colors with automatic brightness regulation(useful
for night operation)

Software features:
display distance and bearing to the nearest APRS/C4FM/D-Star equipped
radio with adjustable range filter(display only units that is inside xx
kilometers, also displays beaconed message, this depends on the hardware).
scanning of stored frequencies and memory groups.
Automatic mode switching and detection of D-star,C4FM and Codec2 modes.
( Example,If the software detects a D-star mode transmission,it switches
to the correct mode automatic! )
display altitude and GPS info.
GPS track logging.
display speed/bearing of travel.
Open software (GNU license)?

compatibility with maps from openstreetmap:
Suggested routing software(unsure about licensing for commercial usage etc):
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gosmore/
http://code.google.com/p/monav/

Modes:
D-star
DMRE-MARC
APRS
NFM
AM
SSB
C4FM
Codec2 ( http://www.rowetel.com/blog/?page_id=452 Bruce Perens, K6BP )

I suggest the name:
Skíblathnir

This radio,if ever built will be a strong competitor against
Icom,Keenwood and Yeasu that has systems/modes that is not cross compatible.

Sadly,i do not know anything about building radios or programming so i
am unable to build anything like this even if i know how to assemble a
computer from parts and solder my own coax connectors.

Input and comments please!
