[hpsdr] hpsdr Digest, Vol 1, Issue 12

FRANCIS CARCIA carcia at sbcglobal.net

It was a nice warm today and the skunks are out tonight so I thought I would ask.
What is the front end of this FPGA machine you guys are building. I just built a double balanced tayloe converter for my Racal RA6830 and have been testing for a week or so.
The close in dynamic range is very good 87 dB at 2.5 kHz.spacing, using a stock dell sound card. 94 dB at 20 KHz spacing. I'm a bit old fashion thinking a roofing filter IF would be better ahead of a DC RX but keeping an open mind.
I would love to have a box that does not be connected to bill gates slugware to function. Just use the tube for a spectrum display.

keep up the good work the hardware pukes are lurking.

Hello

just want to introduce myself to the group and say 'hello world' to
everybody. This is an outstandingly interesting project and I follow the
discussions with more and more exitement. Software defined radio has
brought my interest back to ham radio a few months ago and since then I
am collecting every information I can get hands on.
Unfortunately I cannot contribute much to the project other then
clapping hands from time to time because I am not a professional in
electronics like you folks are. And I am lacking time, that's another
thing. But I am able to solder SMDs!

I just had the same problems with the Kicad Gerber viewer under
WindowsXP. You just can see only full copper layers with some pads here
and there. I searched the web and found a free Gerber viewer which can
be downloaded after doing some registration stuff.

ViewMate from PentaLogix

http://www.pentalogix.com/Download/download.html

Only a little contribution but maybe it helps somebody out.

Most of the time I will stay in the background admiring the creative
people in this group but you can be sure that every information is
soaked up with great interest.

Hi group,

contains the updated files.

I deleted the PDFs of the gerbers since they are causing confusion.
If you don't already have a gerber viewer, please see the message
about Viewmate if you want to view the gerbers.

I also posted the PADs files for the Atlas. You can get an evaluation
version of PADs from:

I added thermals to the DIN41612 and ATX connectors as requested by
Helmut. I posted my reasons for wanting to avoid thermals on the top
layer, but upon further consideration I went ahead and added them
since people's soldering skills and capabilities vary widely. It is
(probably?) more important to make it easy to construct than to worry
too much about the missing ground plane. Any further comments on
this?

Very soon. I was trying to get a direct URL to the form, but there is some
difficulty with that. So if you are not a member, you will have to sign up
for Dale's site.

Dale should be on Teamspeak Forum tonight and I'll ask then, also send
another e-mail.

Probably by the end of the weekend.

I'll post the procedure.

Thanks

Any idea when the Project Order Form will show up? BTW, I'm done

Ray

Thanks!

Phil has given all of us a fair shot at a tangible design and I think we
all
agree that it is a good foundation for going forward. He has also
incorporated the reasonable ideas we have offered.

Here is what I suggest:

You, myself, Lyle Johnson, Phil Covington go to PM and make a decision
on
which company of those suggested to produce the board. Perhaps we could
coordinate a private Teamspeak session Saturday to make it more
efficient.

We will be the Benevolent Dictators to get this to production ASAP
without
vote. The Atlas is the "Appian Way" of his project!

I'll upfront the $ for the initial run and distribute at cost.

I have already asked Dale - WA8SRA to create a "Project Order Form" on
Hamsdr website. (Thanks again Dale!). I already have orders for 3 boards
without any of us participating (Don't e-mail me, you will have to use
the
order form on Dale's fine website, and sign up if you have not already!)

I'll generate a PM to you guys. Sorry to others for narrowing it down.

Thanks
Eric

Eric-

I agree. I looked over the Gerbers briefly and they look pretty good to
me (at least from a quick look). Phil seems to have captured all the
important stuff at this point. After alpha testing if something needs to
change then let's do it then. In the meantime "blue wire" mods will do
wonders! Feature creep can go on forever.

It looks like the pricing is fairly equal amongst the 'known entity'
shops that people have used and are pleased with. There are at least a
couple low-price options available (like 5$ versus $50) but their level
of goodness is an unknown quantity. (usually if something sounds too
good to be true it is...) I guess we need to decide which route to go
and place an order.

It would probably be a good idea to run the files thru one of the online
file checkers to see if there are any major file syntax problems or
other incompatibilities.

I agree let's lock it down and go for Alpha at least. "Feature Creep"
will
kill us otherwise. There is time for more features after an alpha run.

Ok, but we have to lock this down somewhere...

I added T9 which brings out the PWR_OK signal from J19.

Thanks for the introduction! Welcome! It IS exciting. I am a LOT like you,
in that I really can't contribute much in the way of technology, yet love to
read and I actually surprise myself in that I UNDERSTAND most of it. It is a
pleasure to watch the Phil's, and Bill and others work and give us an
education at the same time. We are very fortunate to have these people
working as a group and being able to see and occasionally contribute
something.

I might add to the group that I have had about 10 personal e-mails about the
Atlas board in the past few days, many of which echo your sentiments! So if
Phil and Phil and Bill and Ray and Leon and Lyle, think that folks are not
lurking and paying attention ***** WRONG! *****

You aint't seen nothin' yet. Wait till you get a gander at the Mercury, and
the Janus!

Thanks
Eric

Phil
Sorry but:

What? I think I understand but what missing ground plane?

If anyone attempts this with a $3.00 radio shack soldering iron you need
your head examined! I think I know someone who would assemble the board at a
price if you are incapable. I personally am NOT in favor of compromising the
electrical design for convenience if that is what is being suggested.

Eric

Can we get an update? Things are falling into place! This is not a
criticism. Just a hobby and a wonderful group to learn from for most of us!
The Lionheart is the next most important component in the 'chain' of
components. I'm sure there are folks who will volunteer to help with the
design.

I have secured a 2 hour SDR presentation slot for SDR at the Dayton
Hamvention and have already slotted this HPSDR initiative as one of the
presentations in the timeframe. I think I have identified a person to
present everyone's HPSDR projects but will have more on that later.
Hopefully (if I can get my act together) I will present something at
Freidrichschafen in June. A lot depends on the components of the project
'falling into place' to be successful.

Hi Phil and Eric,

thanks very much for the warm welcome within this group.
Phil, by the way, you can put me on the list for two (2) ATLAS boards
which I would like to purchase.

Just a suggestion: international payment is most convenient and
hassle-fre using PayPal.

I do have PayPal set up and will take payments in that manner. I'm still
getting 'set up' with an ordering form on Dale - WA8SRA website.

Folks!

Eric - AA4SW
Is working on producing Atlas motherboard for the HPSDR project. Phil
Covington N8VB created the project in PADS and, after incorporating
suggestions from hpsdr forum members for this component of the project which
will rapidly go to copper and be distributed for sale in the near future by
myself. (Thanks Phil!)
Dayton Hamvention May 19-21, 2006. I have secured a block of 2 hours for SDR
presentations between Noon and 2 P.M. on 20 May. Tony - KB9YIG has accepted
a slot in the presentaions on the SoftRock40. Another slot is reserved for
HPSDR project, with Presenter to be determined. I will keep everyone
informed on the Dayton SDR happenings as we near the event. I will also post
Audio (via Teamspeak, as well as video) from the FlexRadio Suite on Saturday
night, sponsored by FlexRadio Systems. Gerald - K5SDR has a Forum session on
Saturday 20 May at 10 p.m.

Bob - K5KDN
Has again retired after a work stint in Austin. Reviewing CAT command set
and working with Flex.

Brian - VK1BF
Still waiting Fall and cooler temperatures, in Canberra!

Cecil - KD5NWA
Now has VS 2003 and planning the documentation on PowerSDR with volunteers.

Dale - WA8SRA
Will be posting an Atlas order form on HPSDR Atlas board.

Dan - N4XWE
Got DDS 60 kit from AmQRP and DDS 9851 for free as sample. Working on Linux
