Hi Alex,

The MERCURY will probably use a Cyclone II because of the need to do
DDC on-board.  The MAX II EPM240 is a nice inexpensive part and I like
the idea of using it on the various slave/interface boards like the
JANUS.  This adds an extra layer of protection against "OH S**T" type
of things as far as conflicts on the ATLAS bus.  The MAX II also has
some user flash memory built in to allow storage/retrieval of device
settings and serial numbers/board IDs. etc... over either our I2C or
SPI bus lines.
