I just had a short talk with our rework people in an obscure lab deep in
the bowels of the production building. Even for mounting just an
occasional 1 or 2 parts on a test board or a prototype they utilize a
big controlled profile reflow oven. They don't even attempt any manual
hot-air  tricks.

Somehow I think they would flinch and squawk loudly if I tried talking
them into mounting some Altera parts on a board for me :)
