*YES* a properly engineered real signal test generator might be a good 
starting point. Sadly, I suppose no one can agree on what a "real

Here is a real signal generator with real noise and simulated band condx 
that Johan Forrer KC7WW created and presented at the 1999 DCC.

Johan is a wonderfully talented DSP engineer. Could some of his ideas be 
applied to the modern SDR testing?
