Have a look at the Mercury document on the Wiki since this answers your
question.
In summary it depends on your local situation ( how many strong local
signals are there) and what natural selectivity your antenna system
provides.
Many users find no external filtering is required but it depends on
individual configurations and circumstances.
It's a different story in Europe given the massive strength of the SW
stations there - I've seen 0dBm at the antenna socket before!
Generally if the ADC Overload indicator is not lit then you are not
going to see any improvements by adding a front end filter.
If you are going to use Penny to drive a linear amplifier, and it does
not provide any LPFs of its own e.g. Pennywhisle, then you will need
the Alex LPFs or something similar.
