Part of the incentive to glue an Ethernet PHY onto a Mercury is that
you can then also create a standalone receiver (very much like Phil
Covington's QS1R) and not have to deal with Atlas, Ozy, etc.
Coincidentally it would prove to be a nice proof-of-concept for OzyII.

Thinking about it more, I wonder if there's a suitable 100 Mbps
Ethernet PHY that would be easier to work with, given what I've heard
about NDAs and GigE interfaces? Breaking the work down a little more,
it seems to me that getting a 100 Mbps Ethernet interface to work
would provide most of the framework required to support a GigE PHY,
if/when one is finally selected. Since 100 Mbps Ethernet is so
ubiquitous now, I'd assume there wouldn't be any issues with NDAs and
such.
